Hey there! We’re Andrew and Laura.

A Boat Captain, a Marine Scientist, two PADI Professionals, and ocean enthusiasts who decided to start OceanWide Explorers – an adventure and travel blog inspiring people to explore obscure ocean destinations in fun and novel ways.

This is where we share entertaining stories underwater, off-the-beaten-path adventures, helpful scuba diving tips, fun YouTube videos, encounters with rare marine life, and plenty of advice for hunting lionfish (an invasive species in the Western Atlantic).

It’s a place for people like you who are looking for daily inspiration & motivation to explore your next ocean destination in a more thrilling way.

Or just some helpful adventure tips to help plan your next trip.

We want to show you how to explore the ocean, discover hidden gems above and below the sea, seek experiences over possessions, and motivate passionate ambassadors for our ocean!

Why OceanWide Explorers?

ex·plor·er / noun

a person who explores an unfamiliar area; an adventurer

Two different people with one passion in common: the ocean. It brought us together in 2018 as we were both exploring the world in our own ways.

Since then, we’ve gone on hundreds of dives together, explored countless beaches, and even moved to an island!

Our ultimate goal? Explore the ocean worldwide. And as such, it only seemed fitting to deem ourselves the OceanWide Explorers!

Currently, we’re living in the US Virgin Islands working and playing along the shores of St. Thomas!

You can usually find us with our feet in the sand before plunging into the blue waters of the Caribbean!

Get Inspired

Where do you want to go? For us, we never stray too far away from an ocean view – ESPECIALLY those with a little sunshine and plenty of adventure! Inspire your next experience with some of our travel articles!

Scuba Diving

Scuba Diving is what initially brought us together in 2018 and it’s what continues to drive us forward today. We’re both PADI Professionals and Andrew’s a Boat Captain aboard a dive vessel in the Caribbean. Below, we share the knowledge we’ve garnered working in the industry!

Snorkeling

When diving is out of the question, it’s always nice to grab a mask and fins for snorkeling! No matter which stretch of coastline you find yourself on, you can always find something amazing below the surface!

Island Life

A day after getting married in August of 2021, we packed everything up and moved to the US Virgin Islands the very next day! It’s been a whirlwind of a few years but we continue to learn what it’s like to live on an island every day. These articles share the best insights we’ve learned so far.

Hiking

From time to time, it’s necessary to stay dry and enjoy a hike or two. Whether it’s traversing beaches, subtropical wetlands, mangrove forests, or seaside mountains, you can bet that every hike we do ends with a dip into the water or panoramic ocean views.

Freediving

One of the newer sports we’ve immersed ourselves into is freediving. It’s not Scuba and it’s not snorkeling – it’s more like, “let’s take one breath and see how deep and long we can go”. It’s an exhilarating sport requiring an immense amount of training and practice. But the good news is just about anyone is capable of doing it!

Sailing

While living in South Florida, we had a brief stint of owning a 14-foot Sunfish (the perfect boat to learn how to sail) before purchasing our 23-Hunter Marine Sailboat. We’ve since sold it, but are on the lookout for another boat to sail the Caribbean. Until then, check out our articles on sailing and boat ownership to avoid the mistakes we made!

Paddling

Sometimes the best adventures on the water require a little more human effort beyond firing up the boat engine. Besides, who doesn’t love paddleboarding or kayaking? It’s a relaxing way to enjoy the water while getting great exercise and plenty of sunshine! These articles highlight some of our favorite paddling routes and destinations.

Conservation

And what’s all this exploration for if we don’t strive to protect our oceans while we’re at it? Of course, we’re not perfect (no one is). But we try to do our part to explore and travel in a sustainable, ethical, and eco-conscious way.
