Twin Ledges Overview
Twin Ledges is a shallow water site amidst the 1st and 2nd tier of reef in Fort Lauderdale. It’s best accessed by boat as it sits nearly 2 miles from shore directly east of Fort Lauderdale’s busiest beach at the end of Las Olas Boulevard.
Featuring two prominent ledges parallel to shore, its hard to wonder how Twin Ledges got its name after you see it. One ledge faces to the west (shoreward) and one faces east (seaward). Each ledge drops off to roughly 20 feet with a heightened plateau at 15 feet.
Between the two ledges is a valley – a splice in the bedrock providing an immense amount of habitat for all sorts of marine life. Nurse sharks, sea turtles, grouper, yellowtail snapper are often sighted. Just be sure to say hi to the schools Bermuda Chubs and Sergeant Majors that come to the surface to investigate all the commotion stirring above.
NOTE: Twin Ledges is a quality dive site for spearfishing and lobstering. I often spot large yellowtail snapper, yellow jacks, and the occasional hogfish. Lobsters are frequently spotted inside the cracks and crevices atop the reef.
Navigating Twin Ledges Dive / Snorkel Site
This is an anchor site, so your dive will likely be stationary. If that’s the case, the best way to navigate is to circumnavigate the area in expanding circles.
Begin by circling around the valley. From there, head to the eastern ledge and swim into the current for approximately 300 feet (this is the distance the dive flag on the boat safely covers). Cut across the plateau to the western ledge and drift back to your starting point near the valley.
Obviously, diving doesn’t always shake out so perfectly. But when I recommend a path to divers this is how they do it most often – with good results, too.
Visiting Twin Ledges
The best way to visit Twin Ledges is by booking a snorkel trip with Sea Experience! A local dive operator based in the Bahia Mar Marina, Sea Experience runs daily trips to the site sending eager snorkelers on an exploration of the marine life down below. Divers are always welcome aboard as well!
Sea Experience runs a good operation with an experienced crew. If you’re new to diving, or new to snorkeling, we highly recommend booking a trip with them to get more comfortable in the water.
NOTE: the biggest indicator for a good snorkel day is WIND. Check the winds before you go! If it’s calm, you’re good to go! If it’s blowing, wait another day! You won’t regret it.
What You May See Diving or Snorkeling at Twin Ledges
Smaller fish and the occasional nurse shark and sea turtle are frequently spotted at Twin Ledges. Schools of Sergeant Majors and Bermuda Chubs will greet you at the surface. And amazingly, the only Manta Ray I’ve ever seen in Fort Lauderdale was right here. Unfortunately, I missed the picture!
