Scuba Diving in Fort Lauderdale: Important Terminology

Port Everglades

The main inlet and port of Fort Lauderdale. In fact, Port Everglades is the 3rd busiest cruise port in the world.

Drift Dive

Drift diving is the most common method of diving in Fort Lauderdale. Go with the flow – the current will move you from point A to point B. So sit back, relax, and let the water do the work for you!

Wreck Trek

A series of three (sometimes four) shipwrecks in a row that can be visited on one single drift dive. Fort Lauderdale has a few of them!

Gulf Stream

The Gulf Stream is the major ocean current passing near Fort Lauderdale. This is the lifeblood of all the scuba diving adventures in South Florida.

Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)

This stretch of water separates the barrier islands (the beaches) from Florida’s mainland. This waterway extends from Miami all the way into Georgia.

The Sandbar

I’ve come to learn this has a different meaning depending on the city you’re in. As for Fort Lauderdale? It refers to “the triangle” and is most definitely an actual sandbar with boats anchoring and partying for the day.

Elbo Room

Most certainly NOT referring to the space between you and the person sitting next to you. No, this is the spot for after-dive drinks on Fort Lauderdale Beach!

Bugs

A popular nickname for lobster. (i.e let’s go catch some bugs!)

Artificial Reef

Manmade structures are intentionally deployed into the ocean to serve as an attachment site for coral. The artificial reef eventually, and hopefully, becomes a thriving marine habitat. Examples include concrete, shipwrecks, limestone, and other large, immovable, and coral-inducing material.

Third Reef

The deepest tier of coral reefs in Fort Lauderdale. This reef is nearly 2 miles from shore and begins at 50 feet before sloping down to 100 feet.
