St. John in the US Virgin Islands is peppered with sugar mill ruins, plantation structures, and remnants of grandiose estates. Among the most impressive is Annaberg Sugar Plantation within Virgin Islands National Park.
The ruins are beautifully intact – providing insight into the economics, way of life, and most importantly, the dark history of the African Slave Trade once present throughout the Caribbean.
Almost all of the buildings were constructed by slave labor including the largest windmill on the island, the horse mill, sugar factory, and living quarters.
