Your Ultimate Guide to Snorkeling in South Florida

Seeking ocean adventure on your trip to South Florida? Or are you local looking to try something new? Snorkeling in South Florida is a rewarding, inclusive activity providing you a glimpse into the underwater world of the 3rd longest reef system in the world!

This article provides you with everything you need to know about snorkeling in South Florida. By the end, you’ll have a thorough understanding of considerations to take, what you might see, where to go, gear recommendations, and other tips and tricks to snorkeling.

Why Snorkel in South Florida?

Snorkeling is a great sport for all ages, shapes, and sizes – it’s an inclusive activity that most people can participate in! Not to mention, it’s a great way for folks to connect with natural settings they may not even knew existed! The ocean is our favorite place to be and we want it to be yours too!

As for South Florida, specifically, we’re home to the third longest barrier reef system in the world (gasp!). A 360 linear mile coral reef from the Florida Keys all the way north to Port St. Lucie on Florida’s east coast!

It’s actually called the Florida Reef Tract and it sits only behind The Great Barrier Reef (Australia) and the MesoAmerican Reef (Belize) in terms of length.

Fortunately for visitors to South Florida and the Florida Keys, this coral reef can be accessed in all sorts of places! And in some cases, even right from the beach! Time to strap on that mask and fins, it’s time for you to explore ALL the marine life the Florida Reef Tract has to offer!

What to Consider Before Going Snorkeling in South Florida

Although snorkeling is a fun and easy way to explore the underwater world, it’s still a physical activity that can, at times, be dangerous. Especially if the proper considerations aren’t taken seriously.

Comfort in the Water

Are you able to swim? Are you comfortable in the water? It may seem obvious but these are critical questions you should ask yourself before going snorkeling.

Physical Fitness

It’s important to be physically fit while snorkeling – you’re swimming in the open ocean, after all. Just be honest and realistic with yourself before hopping in!

Weather

Rain or sunshine? That’s usually the big question. Nobody wants to snorkel in the rain! Besides, you can obviously see the bottom better when the sun pierces through the water, shedding light to the vibrancy below!

When it comes to snorkeling, however, it goes further than that. In fact, the most important weather factor isn’t sun at all. It’s wind!

Wind speed is directly correlated with waves. The higher the wind, the wavier it’ll be. The wavier it’ll be, the more likely you’ll get sea sick. Additionally, the more likely silt is displaced – limiting any underwater visibility!

So if you’re planning a snorkel trip in South Florida, the first thing you should check before going is wind speed!

Water Conditions

Double and triple check the water conditions before snorkeling in South Florida. Particularly, waves, tide, current, and water temperature.

We’ve found, for snorkeling in South Florida, it’s best to go at slack high tide (one hour after high tide). The water is bluer and the current tends to be minimal (although, that’s no guarantee).

In fact, some snorkel sites, such as Blue Heron Bridge, are only possible during slack high tide!

NOTE: Check the tides at US Harbors.

  • Always snorkel with a buddy! The more the merrier!
  • Take only pictures and leave what you find! Yes, that includes shells!
