Living on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands occasionally instills a touch of rock fever. It’s natural. Yet, thankfully, we have an entire island nation a short flight away to explore and alleviate some of that sickness!

Bienvenido a Puerto Rico! Our favorite destination from our home on the rock. The island is an adventurer’s paradise with natural beauty and thrilling activities. From exploring the vibrant streets of Old San Juan to diving into the depths of the Caribbean Sea, we were swept away by the island’s endless array of exciting experiences. 

Our first trip to Puerto Rico was an extended stay for our honeymoon. Hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, and chasing waterfalls. We did it all.

On our return trip, we consolidated our time in Old San Juan, enjoying the food, nightlife, and historic landmarks spread throughout the colorful neighborhood. I wouldn’t have done it any other way.

1. Conquer the Streets of Old San Juan

Old San Juan is a vibrant and colorful neighborhood full of history and culture. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in the island’s fascinating past, with charming cobblestone streets lined with historic landmarks and colorful buildings that will take you back in time.

One way to experience the best of Puerto Rico’s history is by taking a walking tour of the historic sites in Old San Juan. You can learn about the city’s colonial past, explore the forts and castles that once protected the island, and discover the stories behind the colorful architecture surrounding you.

In addition to the historical landmarks, Old San Juan also offers fantastic shopping and dining experiences. The streets are filled with boutique shops, artisanal markets, and local restaurants that provide a taste of Puerto Rican cuisine. Whether you’re looking for a unique souvenir to take home or a delicious meal to savor, Old San Juan has something for everyone.

Laura and I made Old San Juan our first stop during our multiple visits to Puerto Rico. At a minimum, I’d recommend staying at least two nights to tour San Juan National Historic Site and its Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristobal, La Fortaleza, Paseo de la Princesa, and many more!

2. Trek Through El Yunque National Forest

El Yunque National Forest is a tropical paradise perfect for outdoor adventurers. This lush tropical rainforest covers over 28,000 acres of land and is home to diverse flora and fauna, indigenous artifacts, cascading waterfalls, natural pools, and awe-inspiring vistas.

El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States that encapsulates Puerto Rico’s natural beauty. The forest is home to over 240 species of trees and 127 terrestrial vertebrates, including the rare and endangered Puerto Rican Parrot. The forest is also a sanctuary for many other species of birds, reptiles, and insects unique to Puerto Rico.

The best way to experience El Yunque Rainforest is via one of the popular hiking trails or impressive waterfalls. La Mina Trail leads hikers to the stunning La Mina Falls – a perfect spot for a refreshing dip in the cool water. Another popular trail is the Big Tree Trail, which takes hikers through a dense forest of towering Tabonuco trees.

When exploring El Yunque Rainforest, it’s essential to do so safely. Wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water and snacks, and be prepared for changes in weather conditions. It’s also important to know the wildlife and respect their habitats.

How to Get to El Yunqe National Forest

The easiest way to visit El Yunque National Forest is via one of the many Puerto Rico tours departing the San Juan area. Many of these tours offer pickups in popular hotels around Old San Juan and the surrounding area.

Otherwise, if you have a rental car, it’s a short, 45-minute drive from San Juan into the beautiful El Yunque Rainforest. This is how we explored El Yunque, stopping at the Angelito Trail to dip in the natural pool and waterfall.

3. Ride the Waves in Rincon

This laid-back beach town in Western Puerto Rico is known for its world-class surfing. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn how to surf or an advanced surfer looking to catch some epic waves, Rincon has a surfing beach suitable for your skill level.

Rincon has a reputation as one of the Caribbean’s top surf towns yet boasts a welcoming culture that makes it easy for visitors to feel at home. The town is on the island’s west coast, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea. For some reason, this results in excellent surfing conditions and waves year-round.

There are plenty of spots in Rincon for both beginner and advanced surfers. The famous Maria’s Beach is an excellent spot for beginners, with small and manageable waves perfect for learning how to surf. For more experienced surfers, Domes Beach is a must-visit spot with powerful waves that can reach up to 20 feet high.

Rincon has plenty of surf schools and equipment rentals if you’re new to surfing. Many surf schools offer private and group lessons for all skill levels, making it easy to learn how to catch a wave like a pro.

4. Discover Gleaming Lighthouses

Puerto Rico’s lighthouses are not only historic landmarks, but they also offer stunning panoramic views of the island’s coastline. Visiting one of these lighthouses is an opportunity to appreciate the island’s rich history and scenic beauty. 

One of the most iconic lighthouses is Faro Los Morrillos, located in Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge. This lighthouse was built in 1882 and was used to guide ships through the treacherous waters of the Mona Passage. Today, visitors can hike to the lighthouse and enjoy breathtaking coastline views.

In addition to Faro Los Morrillos, several other lighthouses are worth visiting in Puerto Rico. These include the Faro de Caja de Muertos on an uninhabited island near Ponce and the Faro de Punta Tuna on the island’s eastern coast.
