Honeymoon Pt. 3: Exploring Domes and Steps Beach in Rincón

Day Three of our honeymoon brought us to the sandy shores of Rincón in Western Puerto Rico! Join us as we explore Domes and Steps Beaches!

On August 7th, 2021, Laura and I (Andrew) tied the knot! The very next day, we packed our bags and moved to the US Virgin Islands as Laura pursued her Master’s Degree in Marine Science at the local university in St. Thomas.

Although we moved to a tropical paradise for a minimum of the next two years, this was never considered a viable option as a proper honeymoon (much to my bantered efforts). So, when we finally got the chance the following May, we packed our bags for the nearby island of Puerto Rico!

This short video series is my way of chronicling our honeymoon to preserve and revisit these memories in the future!

Exploring Domes and Steps Beaches in Rincón, Puerto Rico

f you’re looking for a fantastic beach vacation, look no further than Puerto Rico. These two beaches, Domes and Steps are some of the most beautiful in Rincon. With crystal-clear water and stunning scenery, you’ll love spending your days here!

Domes Beach is most famous for its epic surfing opportunities – some of the best in the Caribbean. As you’ll see in the video, surfing conditions were not ideal, with some of the calmest seas these beaches might have seen in a year.

However, we hiked along the coastline, beginning at Faro de Rincon before making our way north along the coast, starting at Domes Beach. The shoreline trail runs from the beach to the beach for as long as you want.

Later in the day, we changed course and visited Steps Beach to enjoy the sunshine and beautiful limestone formations projecting into the ocean.

Exploring Domes and Steps Beaches in Rincón: Video Transcript

The next step of our Honeymoon adventure has brought us to Rincon! This once-small town on the west coast of Puerto Rico is booming with ex-pats, backpackers, and vacationers, ourselves included. The town is mainly known for its surfing beaches but also has fantastic scuba diving opportunities, great restaurants, nearby hiking trails, waterfalls, and a pretty cool lighthouse.

Plus, given the time of year, you might even spot some whales along the horizon. But unfortunately, not today.

As you might have noticed, we had a pretty kick-ass place with a private pool, so I’ll be honest, we spent most of our time poolside with a margarita. However, we wandered around Rincon’s popular areas to see what we could find. So thanks for joining us on our slightly adventurous yet mildly relaxing day exploring Rincon.

Hiking Along Domes Beach from El Faro de Rincon

If you’re looking for some free fun while you’re visiting, consider following along the path we took. We started at the lighthouse before heading over to Domes Beach. This beach is the most popular surfing beach in Puerto Rico and is typically packed with surfers catching the swell. However, we visited in May when the surf was nonexistent.

For us, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. We took surf lessons the next day, and let me tell you, it was much easier learning on the bunny hill than on the black diamond.

If you keep following the beach, you’ll find a series of trails leading around the point to other beaches. Hike as long as you wish before heading to the lighthouse to go elsewhere!

La Reserva Marina Tres Palmas and Steps Beach

We spent the rest of the day relaxing in the sun at Steps Beach in La Reserva Marina Tres Palmas – a local eco-reserve with shoreline trails, a sandy beach, and limestone outcroppings for some awesome snorkeling. The key feature of Steps Beach is a random set of concrete steps on the beach. Not sure how it got there, but it’s a good photo-op.

If you’re nerdy like us, you can comb the beach to find neat creatures in the tide pools or collect the almonds dropping from the trees overhead. After that, it’s time for the wine – after all, we’re on vacation!

And, of course, if you look overhead, you’ll notice the dark clouds coming in. Rincon sits on the edge of the only tropical rainforest in the United States. Remember that when planning any outings.

But, it always seems to pass, eventually culminating in unbelievable sunsets at the Beach House.
