Honeymoon Pt. 2 – Hiking in El Yunque National Forest

Day 2 of our Honeymoon in Puerto Rico brought us hiking in El Yunque National Forest for a scenic hike to a natural swimming pool.

On August 7th, 2021, Laura and myself (Andrew) tied the knot! The very next day, we packed our bags and moved to the US Virgin Islands as Laura pursues her Master’s Degree in Marine Science at the local university in St. Thomas.

Although we moved to a tropical paradise for a minimum of the next two years, this was never considered a viable option as a proper honeymoon (much to my bantered efforts). So, when we finally got the chance the following May, we packed our bags for the nearby island of Puerto Rico!

This short video series is my way of chronicling our honeymoon to preserve and revisit these memories in the future!

Hiking in El Yunque National Forest at Angelito Trail

Day 2 of our honeymoon was spent entering the beautiful landscape of El Yunque National Forest. The federally protected area is a tropical rainforest and features many scenic overlooks, waterfalls, rivers, swimming holes, hiking trails, and an interactive visitor center.

Visiting El Yunque is easily one of the top things to do in Puerto Rico, right along with Old San Juan. Specifically, we visited Angelito Trail – a short hike descending to Rio Mameyes and the Las Damas Pool. It’s a wonderful place to climb on the rocks, splash in the cool waters, and enjoy time with friends and family.

Hiking the Angelito Trail Video Transcript

Following the Signs to El Yunque

I really want to highlight this sign because it took nearly five attempts to capture it on video during our 45-minute drive from San Juan. Amazing!

Now, you might have guessed where we’re going, but, we want to specifically explain as to what part of El Yunque and why.

Reserving a spot in La Mina Recreation Area

You can make a reservation for the La Mina Recreation Area of El Yunque UP to one month in advance. Another percentage is released one day prior for procrastinators. You can probably tell who the planner is in the relationship and who isn’t.

Angelito Trail

The Angelito Trail is an easy hike through the tropical forest that only takes 10 to 15 minutes. In the end, you’ll be treated to a flowing river with climbable boulders and a refreshing swimming hole.

You know, at some point you’ll just have to give up – especially if you’re already wearing flip-flops.

We made it. Now, it’s time to slide on in, kick back, and enjoy the magnificent beauty of Puerto Rico.
