The 27 Best Mnemonics for BWRAF
BWRAF is PADI’s acronym for your pre-dive safety check. Here are some funny mnemonics that will help you remember exactly what it stands for.
Oh, PADI. The Professional Association of Diving Instructors is easy to pick on with their endless supply of acronyms, mnemonics, and memory tools. After all, a common nickname for PADI’s very own acronym is:
- Put
- Another
- Dollar
- In
Obviously, given for their notorious reputation for charging an arm and a leg for every little thing.
Brutal, I know.
But it made us think, what other acronyms in scuba diving have different renditions? A mnemonic, if you will. We decided to go with the famous pre-dive safety check, BWRAF – as every scuba instructor seems to have a different version.
What does BWRAF stand for?
First of all, let’s establish what BWRAF actually stands for:
- BCDs
- Weights
- Releases
- Air
- Final Check (Fins to Face)
It’s used for divers to ensure they have everything strapped on, secured, and ready for a fun and safe dive. It’s actually super important to do – every instructor must infuse it in their open water teaching.
However, sometimes it’s hard to remember what it stands for. Or what the acronym even is in the first place. So instructors like to use clever mnemonics to remember. Here are some of the most popular after scanning the internet:

My daughter and I came up with this one yesterday: Belgian Waffles Really Are Fantastic.
That’s great! Perfectly kid-friendly as well!

I live in the PNW & our “well seasoned” PADI instructor gave us the “official” PADI mnemonic, but he also gave us an “unofficial” one for our area: A (air), BC (bcd), D (drysuit), W (weights), R (releases), F (final). He said that making sure your drysuit is totally zipped, valves set, hose attached, etc, is really important (hence, adding it as a category). He also included in “F” not just gear, but “final plan”- as in check with your buddy/ies one last time to make sure everyone is on the same page with the dive plan. Cheers!
Sarah,
I love F as Final Plan – it’s important to be on the same page as your dive buddy! Plan your dive and dive your plan!

I was taught Beautiful Women Reject And Frustrate 😀 Very hard to forget so it worked!
