VIDEO: Diving the Houseboat in Fort Lauderdale
Check out our video of diving the Houseboat in Fort Lauderdale – one of two shipwrecks that sunk on its own in the area.
Diving the Houseboat in Fort Lauderdale
One of two actual shipwrecks in Fort Lauderdale (the other being the SS Copenhagen), the Houseboat is a rarely visited dive site off the coast of Fort Lauderdale Beach which sunk in 1974.
The Houseboat sits in 95′ of water amongst patch coral reefs and a ghostly field of failed environmentalism. Just off the starboard stern of the wreck is thousands of tires – remnants of an environmental project gone wrong.
The wreck itself is small, at only 70′ in length but the surrounding area is worthwhile to explore. Bounce from reef to reef as you hunt for lionfish, pick up lobster, or seek some epic marine life.
Getting to the Houseboat
Two dive charters in town may go here on occasion:
- Sea Experience: out of Bahia Mar Marina on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Sea Experience offers daily snorkel and dive trips. Call and ask if the Houseboat is on the schedule.
- American Dream Dive Charters: hop aboard their 46′ Newton and explore the depths of Fort Lauderdale. Again, call and ask if they can bring you to the Houseboat.
