Invasive Lionfish in Fort Lauderdale
Lionfish are an invasive species in the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. They were first discovered off the coast of Dania Beach in 1985 after being introduced from the Indo-Pacific. Somehow, someway, someone made a very costly mistake releasing it into an ocean it didn’t belong!
Today, lionfish are overrunning the natural and artificial reefs off the coast of South Florida. Why? They eat anything and everything while having no natural predators. This means the invasive species’ population booms while native fish populations suffer.
The only way to combat this invasion is for divers like you and me to remove them! The best part? It’s easier to do than you think!
